Not to brag, but I was born in the year of the snake. 2025 has also been the year of the snake and it shows. Change, growth, shedding the old, resilience- all trademarks of a sinuously snakey year.
I make jewelry with snake sheddings and slithery motifs because I relate so deeply to this misunderstood and often maligned creature.
People are afraid of snakes. They’re unnerved by how they move, that they don’t seem to emote, and that they may even strike without warning. People are always afraid of what they don’t understand.
Snakes are elegant, observant, and won’t strike unless provoked or really hungry. Honestly? Same.
Snakes outgrow themselves and shed their old skin, entering a new phase of their lives bigger, shinier, and stronger. We could all learn to shed what we’ve outgrown, what no longer serves us.
In this piece, I have placed the shed skin of the Spitting Cobra, so named for its ability to spit venom directly from its fangs at a target with alarming accuracy. Set under a shield shaped quartz crystal, a reminder to spit your venom only when necessary, only in defense.
